Its a snow day here, can you believe it. Yes, the schools are closed, its snowing, and we are all home watching the inaugauration.
Over the weekend we went to see the movie Gran Torino. It was not a gang movie as some might expect according to the previews, but was a great movie and was very well made. Supposedly,it is the last movie that Clint Eastwood is going to act in. If it is ,he is certainly going out in style.
There have been lots of challenges that I faced this weekend. Not just the movie and popcorn and stuff like that, but even going to the store and seeing Valentines candy on the shelves, trying to get home before the hunger pains really strike me, that sort of thing.
Lets see what kinds of ideas each of us have to help fight those kinds of cravings. Sometimes I am not even all that hungry, its just that things are there, they look good and I am thinking, hum?, maybe something for later.
Lets share some hunger pain, gotta have it craving stories. Maybe something someone else has dealt with will help another one of us.

Ahhh, cravings.....I think we need to stop and decide what we are REALLY hungry for. Most of the time it's not food. That being said, I weakened and had popcorn at the movie theater - paid for it by the scale. So, next time, I'm taking a page from Jill's book and creating my own snack to take with me.
ReplyDeleteLast year I gave up soda. it was a great challenge for me since I really like it. I am betting it saved our family close to $200 with all the times we went out to eat and gas station stops. This year I am giving up peanut butter. I have not had any peanut butter since the day before Thanksgiving. A peanut butter sandwich was my snack of choice when I came home. With the recent recall of peanut butter I guess I made a good choice. A man from the health department came to my classes today and announced there ahve been over 60 deaths so far so be sure you throw away your peanut butter stuff like crackers, cookies, & even ice cream.
ReplyDeleteFrom Dr. Phil's book I read a few years back I leanred that hunger will be supressed by drinking water. Take your weight divided by 2 and this is how many ounces of water you should be drinking each day.
Thanks for the lotto ticket Susan but it was a dud.
Oh well, you can never tell on those lotto tickets. Win some, lose some, its all in the game.
ReplyDeleteWe keep a bowl of different types of gum on the table, not already chewed, oooooh, and that does help. If my jaw isn't tired from yapping, then it gets exercise from the chewing.
Thanks for the ideas losers.
good luck,
losers,
susan
Great question Susan! I take a page from Todd's book and drink some water first. If I am still craving it, I try to distract myself. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. There is something to be said for just giving in and having it. Sometimes you just end up eating more trying to avoid the item you are craving. I remember one time Jerri had a bag of peanut m&m's. She counted out "x" amount for herself and then gave the rest to one of my kids. That was a really smart way to satisfy the craving without giving yourself the option to go overboard. That Jerri can be a smarty sometimes! Hope everyone has a great evening!!
ReplyDeleteI had a great time at the movie with Jerri, even though I didn't have popcorn. I took a baggie that contained rice chex, pretzels, and reduced fat cheeze its. It satisfied me and I didn't even eat all of it. AND saved me money, too!
ReplyDeleteI am not voluntarily being all that good. Something is out of whack in my digestive system and everything I eat is affecting me. Sooooo, I'm eating smaller portions and sticking to some fairly bland food, hoping that will help.
I'm also remembering the mature women vs. the punks and that's helping a lot. I don't want to let the other women down!
Susan, I want to add that you are doing a GREAT job with this blog! It is a lot of fun and it's great keeping in touch with everyone. Thanks for starting it!
ReplyDeleteOh, and sorry to hear you had snow. Must have been a shock to a lot of people down there.
I find that more often than not, I really am not hungry when I am rumaging through the pantry, but really just spiritually starving. This may sound weird I know, but for me, it's true. If I just read my Bible (there's a lot of great verses about food and it's purpose being to live and sustain us and not to go overboard) or pray, usually I will find that God gives me the strength to overcome that urge. I have NO willpower on my own. I believe that everyone has an emptiness in our heart and mine can be filled and satisfied with the Lord, but I choose more often than not to stuff it with food. Bored? Have a 4 cookies. Mad? Have a hot fudge sundae. Feeling depressed? Eat 5 brownies. For me, I know that food won't fix my feelings, but my relationship with God will sustain me and redirect my life. Some may call this emotional eating. It's whatever, but it is what it is. I also remember seeing with my own eyes real hungry kids in Haiti and then I remember how blessed I am and that I have the ability to afford groceries, choose good food to prepare, and own a fridge to keep it in. This really puts things in perspective for me.
